COP29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, has just started in Baku, Azerbaijan. Running from 11th to 22nd November, a key priority for this year's climate conference is to secure a new goal on climate finance, ensuring every country has the means to take much stronger climate action, slashing greenhouse gas emissions and building resilient communities.

LUCSUS researchers and LUMES alumni are participating in different events during, and after, the climate conference.

Events at COP29

Breaking Barriers: Navigating Adaptation Limits: Addressing Loss and Damage through Inclusive and innovative Climate Action
Organiser: United Nations Environment Programme
14 November

Professor Emily Boyd is participating.

This side event will explore cutting-edge research and innovative solutions addressing adaptation limits, loss and damage, and climate finance in the context of climate change. Igniting the power of transformative partnerships for inner and outer transformation
Organiser: Brahma Kumaris partnering with Commonland Foundation and Ecosystem Restoration Communities
21 November

Professor Christine Wamsler is participating.

The People´s Climate vote 2024 tells us that people do want to change. Yet modernist thinking and worldviews entangled with colonial power dynamics exclude other perspectives from decision-making. Accordingly, environmental policy tends to ignore human inner dimensions, intrinsic values and relational worldviews that are inherent in various traditional and wisdom communities. Speakers from diverse backgrounds (Politics, Science, Faith, Activism) share their perspectives on the chances and requirements of including inner transformation in our efforts at e.g. COP. Together with participants we reflect upon how e.g. COP would need to be restructured and redesigned. The aim is to produce a recommendation paper of the discussion.

Speakers

  • Prof. Christine Wamsler, Lund University, Sweden (online)
  • Sister Jayanti Kirpalani, Ad. Head of Brahma Kumaris
  • Youth rep: Dewy Sacayan, Earth Savers, Philippines
  • John Liu, Ecosystem Ambassador, Commonland Foundation

Moderation: Carolin Fraude, Research Institute for Sustainability Potsdam and Brahma Kumariser

From Lund to Global Climate Action: Lessons from COP 29 Climate Negotiations
Organiser: Lund University Sustainability Forum together with the Lund University Alumni Relations Office
28 November

Join us for a one-hour digital panel discussion with Lund University alumni – who are now actively involved in shaping global climate policy – and a researcher from Lund University's delegation to COP 29. In addition to providing a deeper understanding of the work on global climate challenges, the panel will also share their personal career journeys and reflect on how their time at Lund University has influenced their path into climate work.

LUMES alumni Yuichi Tsuchibuchi, now a PhD student at University of Tokyo, is participating in the event.
